build

Before you start...

We sell you the kit on the assumption that you have a reasonable level of skill and understanding as a DIYer and are a competent user and owner of a small number of power tools. These should include a drill and a jigsaw as a minimum requirement, and you should have access to a range of commonly used bits and blades. You will also need a space in which to assemble and store a vehicle that will be approximately 6' x 2' when complete.

Getting going!

Most builders find it easiest to buy each stage kit as they go along rather than acquire everything in one go; this gives them time to complete every job to their satisfaction and also to assemble the parts that we don't supply, such as ignition panel, wiring, steering wheel, upholstery and so on. We leave it to the customer to source these so each build is as individual as the child that owns, drives and - we hope - helps to maintain their car.

Every build begins with Stage 1: acquiring the full-size pattern/plan set and build manual (£60 inc UK delivery), an 8' x 2' sheet of 18mm ply and some lengths of architrave and blocks, often offcuts you may have hiding in your shed.

Building up.

Once you've cut out and fixed the chassis and bulkheads you'll be ready for Stage 2: our pre-fabricated, ready-assembled parts kit, consisting of laser cut stub axles, rear axles, hubs, discs & brake calipers, kingpins, spacers, bushes, nuts, bolts, washers and wheels (£399 inc UK delivery). If you're handy with a mig welder and are on good terms with an engineering factor you can of course fabricate everything yourself if you want to - patterns are supplied in the set. Most people find it easier to buy the kit, though.

Motive-ation (groan)

With these in place it's time for Stage 3: head off to our engine supplier, Orange Imports, who will provide you with everything you need to provide motive power as a complete kit:

We're currently hard at work on developing an EV option, but a reliable, reasonably priced solution that has acceptable range has thus far proved elusive. You are of course at liberty to devise your own setup!

Perfect body.

With engine and brakes in place, it's time for Stage 4: cutting and fitting the bodywork, which comprises 2x 220L Whitefurze Garden Composters and 1x Whitefurze 230L Waterbutt.  You can buy the composters from Amazon at £54.50 each and the Waterbutt at £60.99 (price checked 24/04/24, total RRP £169.99) or direct from us for just £125 (pick-up price from SY5 - UK Delivery by arrangement).
